MAYA and shit

Posted by fabulous999 - January 20th, 2010

I'm excited! Like a little high school girl in her prom dress! Oh lord that sounds inexcusably gay but the mental image makes me laugh so I'm leaving it. What? Oh, right. I'M LEARNIN' THE MAYA!

I've been avoiding the 3D skills on account of most 3D software looking like the cockpit of a fucking commercial aircraft but seeing as how I'm supposedly making a career out of the 3D animation someday I thought it might be a good idea to, yknow, use it. So I am! And I feel stupid again! So help!

Any links to sites with good tutorials and tips and such? Any helpful tidbits or words of wisdom? Does anyone on Newgrounds actually do this stuff?

I'm planning on checking out a buttload of Gnomon DVDs, and that's basically "the plan" in it's entirety. So far so good but yeah, just thought I'd see if anyone here had some input.

Oh yeah, and what's a Zbrush? Fuck you I know it's a program but what's it for specifically, like, does it replace other programs or just something to use in concert with? Any other software I should consider?

I use 3DStudio MAX, Solidworks and a little Cinema4D

Zbrush is more for painting details into your model in an intuitive-hi poly-photoshop-esque way, it allows you to precisely chip bits away or make scratches.

I'm not really doing it justice by explaining it, but zbrush only enhances Maya or 3DsMAX, I wouldn't use it by itself though I guess you could...

That's what I figured about Zbrush, judging from what I've seen on various CG related sites. I played with 3DS Max 4 a long time ago but never got into it because I just guess I'm a useless lazy bastard sometimes. I'm going the Maya route now since my school uses it and to me it's all apples to apples at this point. Very complex apples with lots of buttons.

Nooo, Zbrush allows you to make models by sculpting like clay on the computer. Maya will have a tool similar to this, but Zbrush is specially designed for it. It ALSO has great texturing tools.

As far as learning, I've always found that the best way to learn something is to do it. (CLICHE!! :D) As in, think up some small specific thing you want to do then Google how to do it. I know that sounds silly, but the biggest hurdle to learning any new program is getting the nerve to dive in and break it a few times. Once you're used to the interface it'll suddenly seem really intuitive and simplistic.

I completely agree, thanks for the advice and additional info on Zbrush. I'm real curious because all the characters I've seen related to Zbrush look mind blowingly detailed particularly compared to what I'm used to seeing with 3D work.

I'm so sad! i got banned from reviewing! Fucking shitbitch mods...

Before you master the program, you must master yourself. Hehe

I'll be sure to master myself BEFORE starting Maya, since you need both hands free most of the time.

I agree with the guy above me !

Zbrush is a great program. I have it as well as Maya. I use Zbrush for making models and then put them into maya for whatever purposes arrouse my intention. Definatly download the trial at Pixellogic.com, the amount of detail you can add is AMAZING. a word of advice. Its takes a lot of time to go through the tutorials and actually master it. same for maya.

I will definitely be sure to check out the Zbrush once I feel a little less stupid with the Maya.

Zbrush not only allows you to make hi-poly renders, but it also allows you to take the details you create and make a normal map out of it, similar to a bump map. It's a 2d texture that receives light and looks 3d when mapped to a lower poly model. Normal maps range from blue to pink and purple in color as opposed to bump maps that are usually grayscale.

I'm basically racing through Maya tutorials now so I can take a crack at incorporating Zbrush! I'm waiting for the guy who's gonna be like "fuck Zbrush" but so far I can't imagine why.

I AM A BANANA!
